Graduate Assistant

University of Florida

Upon acceptance to the University of Florida Master of Science in Health Education program, I was offered a position as a graduate assistant. These positions are highly desired and I was recommended by professors to serve in this role. I was the graduate assistant to Dr. Holly Moses, PhD, CHES, for the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters. Along with another graduate student, Kristen Boggs, we were assigned to Professional Development: HSC4800 and Health Education Internship: HSC4876.

In the Professional Development course, we graded discussion posts and several other assignments and corresponded to students regarding their grades and professional development interests. The Health Education Internship course involved recording and monitoring student's accumulated internship hours to assure they completed either their required full-time (480 hours) or part-time (240 hours) internship.  We went through each student's bi-weekly report to review their daily tasks, hours, and breaks to look for any discrepancies and determine their hours worked each week. Students served at internship sites all over the state, country, and even world, with one student serving in Africa! I greatly enjoyed reading about the student's experiences and seeing them grow as a health educator or affiliated role. I provided encouraging comments to the students and alerted the professor of any concerns.

This position involved a lot of collaboration and correspondence with the professor, the other GA, and students in both courses. It was important to be organized, efficient, and timely.
